View from the Bottom

The View from the Bottom is Mike Millisor’s monthly letter to all of the stakeholders of the Breckenridge Grand Vacations family of resorts.

It’s just a few days away! This Saturday, June 10 at 10:00 a.m., walkers and runners will take their first steps in the Second Annual Rob Millisor Heart Health Walk in Breckenridge. We are looking to top last year’s crowd, when more than 1,000 walkers participated to honor my late brother Rob, who passed away in 2015, and to raise more than $201,000 for heart health research and awareness.

If you were able to join us last year, I don’t have to remind you of the tremendous energy and goodwill that permeated Carter Park and the streets and trails of Breckenridge. If you weren’t able to join us, I can only encourage you to come up this Saturday to see for yourself. It was an amazing testament to the power of family, and to BGV’s commitment to family. Almost no one showed up alone. BGV owners brought their families; employees brought their roommates and friends. And lots of people brought their dogs!

For those of you who are new to the Breckenridge Grand Vacations family, my brother Rob was an apparently healthy, vital man of 51. Just the previous spring he had completed the Boston Marathon in a very respectable time. Yet he passed away suddenly from undiagnosed heart disease. Had he known of his condition, it could have been treated with a readily accessible medication.

My partner, Mike Dudick, and I, as well as the entire community, decided that we wanted to do something to help prevent this tragedy for other families. We instituted what we intend to be an annual event both to honor Rob and to contribute to ongoing research to prevent and treat heart disease.

So please join us! Registration for this year’s event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Carter Park. The 5k trail run will start at 10:00 a.m.; walkers will start the 5k trail walk shortly afterward, at 10:15, and the one-mile town route will open at 10:30 a.m. There is no parking at Carter Park, so event parking will be at the South Gondola Lot, located just south of the BreckConnect Gondola. Shuttles will take participants to and from Carter Park, or participants are welcome to walk to the Park, a distance of less than a mile.

And we’ll take good care of you when you get here. Participants receive an event T-shirt and commemorative gifts, morning snacks and a heart healthy lunch. There will be live entertainment, booths with information on heart health, prize giveaways and children’s activities. There’s something for everyone!

One hundred percent of every dollar received at this event will be contributed to the Rob Millisor Heart Health Fund at the Summit Foundation to support heart health programs, education and research. What more could you ask? Food, exercise, fun and camaraderie while contributing to a great cause – not to mention a great excuse for a trip to the mountains on an early summer day. Information and pre-registration (open through Thursday, June 8) may be found here, but walk-in registration will also be available on the day of the event.

I hope you’ll decide to include us in your weekend plans. I guarantee you’ll be glad you did.
