On September 25, 2021, Carter Park in Breckenridge looked a little different than usual. Music was playing, a large crowd wearing orange waited under a giant “Start” balloon banner, and most importantly, all were there to support the worthwhile cause of heart health. This year’s 6th Annual Rob Millisor Heart Health Walk was truly one for the books! Everyone was grateful to safely gather again in person and feel the excitement in the air as this energy had been greatly missed. The day was filled with runners, walkers, families, and local business vendors sharing ways to be proactive regarding heart health. Participants were served a healthy lunch and enjoyed community yoga, all amidst a beautiful fall day while taking time to remember Rob, and his profound impact on BGV and the Summit County community.

BGV has been allocating funds raised from this event to purchase new public-use automatic external defibrillators (AED) units, while creating a community-wide CPR/DEFIB Education Program. In addition, a major grant has focused on how living at high altitude can impact the health of Summit County residents over time while supporting local heart-healthy programs.

The next phase of our AED improvement program is to work with the Summit County GIS (geographic information systems) to map AED locations in and around the Summit County area. During a life-saving event, every second matters and knowing where AEDs are located is paramount. Emergency responders will use this AED mapping to assist those at the scene to the nearest AED. Funds raised from BGV’s Heart Health Walk has ensured this mapping can move to its final phase and implementation.

This year’s Heart Health Walk raised $178,868 and will help continue to fund the critical lifesaving efforts mentioned above. When the 6-year total for this event began approaching $1 Million, Mike and I pledged the final $29,408 to hit this unprecedented landmark as we agreed that it was just the right thing to do for the community in an effort to support heart health. We have seen first-hand at our own resorts how education and AED placement have saved lives!

We want to thank all our owners, guests and local support for continuing to keep saving and changing lives for the better. Heart health will always be a passion of ours, and we hope yours, too.

So, cheers to you and your health! And as always, we hope to see you soon again in Breckenridge.
